LC-MS/MS for discovery, targeted quantitative, and structural proteomics 

 

Abstract

The combination of high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and mass spectrometry is a powerful tool to answer a multitude of analytical questions. How much of a certain protein is in my plasma sample? Which proteins are up- or down-regulated between two treatment groups? Does my monoclonal antibody drug accumulate in the patient, even though ELISA tells me it doesn’t? And is my new biosimilar drug actually biosimilar to the originator drug? 

During my talk I will present various mass spectrometry-based proteomics applications from MRM Proteomics’ own experience, ranging from discovery and targeted quantitative proteomics workflows to structural proteomics. I will also discuss practical considerations, advantages, and limitations of each technique. 

 

 

Biosketch

After receiving his BSc and MSc degrees in Applied Chemistry and Bio-/Pharmaceutical Analysis from the University of Applied Sciences Fresenius in Germany, Robert Popp went on to receive his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Victoria, BC, Canada. His PhD thesis work focussed on developing targeted quantitative proteomics methods to quantify PI3K/AKT pathway proteins in a rapid way using immuno-MALDI mass spectrometry.  

Since 2018, he has been employed by MRM Proteomics as a research scientist, then project manager, and now COO, primarily focussing on offering services to the research community in quantitative proteomics, as well as metabolomics and structural proteomics applications through a close partnership with the Lady Davis Institute/Jewish General Hospital.  

In his spare time, he enjoys analyzing financial statements and is completing a Financial Analysis program at the McGill University School of Continuing Studies.

The Montreal mass spectrometry discussion group (MMSDG) is a not-for-profit organization that provides a forum to promote local, national and international interactions among scientists involved in mass spectrometry. MMSDG sponsors scientific seminars and forums to present the latest developments in basic and applied research in mass spectrometry. An annual MMSDG meeting that regroups students and postdoc is held every spring in Montreal, and provide a unique networking opportunity to participants and enhance the visibility and awareness of local contributions in mass spectrometry.
